Should kids spend less time in front of screens?

The average kid sponges in 2.5 hours of music each day, almost five hours of TV and movies, three hours of Internet and video games, and just 38 minutes of old-fashioned reading, according to a new study by the Kaiser Family Foundation (abcnews.go.com).

Frankly you really shouldn't be subjected to television before the age of two. But the prime amount to spend in front of screens is nil that is practically impossible these days (unless you’re in a prison or something) because laptops are required in class in higher grades like grades 12, 11 and 10. I’m in grade 5 and yet we’re using a form of laptop called the Chromebook to do LA, German (I’m in a German bilingual school), Math, etc. Sometimes we even spend a whole computer class playing Little Alchemy and Conveyor (video games).

What I would like to know very much is how much time you spend time in front of screens?
How much time in front of screens do you think would be the best (counting by hours)?

At what age did you start watching screens?

  1. I don't watch very much t.v or play very much video games' because I have cheer three days a weak and when I don't have cheer I'm doing homework reading or going to my brothers hockey games.I watch a about 5 hours a week of t.v and 6-7 hours of playing video games.[that's on a week that I don't have much homework]

  2. I spend about an average of one to three hours a day in front of screens. I think that kids should only spend about zero to three hours for electricity and there eye sake. I started to watch TV at the age of 1. I also agree that kids should spend less time in front of screens.

  3. Nice blog. I spend a maximum of 1 hour per day in front of a screen . I really don't think that its a good idea to stick a toddler in front of the TV just so they won't bother you or what ever. I listen to alot of music at home. Our teacher ( who is very awesome ) plays classical music but he doesn't turn it up to high.

  4. My family didn't get a TV until a I was around the age of 4-6.The reason this is, is because I was in a small house when I was born and because I didn't have interest into TV.But now on week days I am usually busy after school but I still watch around 3.5 hours in front of the TV because my babysitter leaves on the TV with Disney junior on it for the 2-5 babies she has plus my brother and her daughter. But on weekends I spend most of my time in front of a screen, playing hockey, playing with friends or eating. So really my life is basically based around electronic but I spend 2 hours every day reading.

  5. I started to watch T.V when I was about 2 and a Half. I didn't get my first video game until I was 6. But now I don't play my games very often unless it's my I pod touch and I usually play it every 2-3 days. I am interested in Discovery films and clips. They are very fascinating. I love the "Chromebooks!" You can do a lot of cool things with them like play educational games and write papers too! Some video games are very educational though.

  6. I watch or play video games at 8:00 to around 9:00. When I play video games I have to read 1 minute is one minute for video games. For TV I have to read 20 minutes to watch any amount of TV I want. I love watching TV and playing video games but I try not to do it a lot. I think around 1 hour day for playing video games or watching TV.

  7. I think that kids should have less screen time each day, but in my opinion music is not a problem. I think that kids should only get two hours of all electronics (except music) together. Reading on the other hand is good for the brain so I think kids should read for at least 1:30-2:00 hours a day. I probably have 3-5 hours of electronics per day and on weekends 3-6 hours. As for how old I was when I started electronics, I have no idea.

  8. I hardly ever watched t.v when I was young. My mom would get out some crafting supplies or colours so we could craft. I loved painting and making handmade decoration but technology has taken over. I saw a commercial once where a girl wanted to draw and she was standing in front of a peace of paper. Then her mom passed her an I-pad with a drawing app on it. Seriously! That was one of the worst commercials in the world. More screen time more pollution! It's my modo for technology.

  9. I wonder how video games can effect your brain. I heard of a guy who was addicted to video games and it wrecked his life. And there are some active games and if you limit your time in front of a screen and more time outside and in a weird way it can be good for you.

  10. At my house we do not listen to music except when my dad sneaks the radio on.
We also do not watch a lot of TV or movies because of the HUGE pile of homework our teachers give us.
I would spend one hour on video games but we spend at least two hours because of the Chromebooks.

  12. I never did start to watch the TV until I was 7 years old. But, when the I-pods and I-pads came out my family changed now my sister is an I-pad freak and couch potato. And now every time I ask her do you want to play outside with me she says no way. And when I ask can I play with you then she also says no. So now I usually go to my bedroom and read. That's probably better for me though.

  13. I actually don't know when did I start watching screens, but I think it was when I was 2-3 years old. Sometimes I spent about 3-5 hours watching TV but usually 2-3 hours only. I think it will be better that if people played outside more instead of watching TV or playing video games like Minecraft. Very nice blog Mr. edible stuff!
